What's the difference between Supervision and Coaching?

There are many similarities with coaching and supervision for leaders. While both are concerned with supporting the development of individuals there are some key differences. Some leaders we work with access only supervision or coaching and some access both - these are the really lucky ones!

Supervision is concerned with supporting individuals to manage the impact of their role. It is client driven, open to go in any direction that is needed in order to support individuals to reflect upon challenges, situations and relationships and to take time to explore the impact of these on their professional and personal life. The goal of supervision is to give clients protected time within a safe space to be reflective, honest and true about what is going on for them.

Coaching is more concerned with goal oriented approach. Some coaching is specifically aimed at improving an aspect of leadership or teaching, for example instructional coaching.

Leadership Coaching with Emma Lewry Ltd enables an open, client driven approach towards exploring and working towards clear goals. Sessions can be face to face or online and 1:1 or in groups depending on the nature of the goals.
